"I Can Cope" Helps Patients, Families Cope With Cancer

Cancer patients and their families face numerous challenges. Suddenly plunged into a world of unfamiliar medical terms, tests, and treatments such as radiation, chemotherapy, or surgery – many feel overwhelmed.
Middlesex Hospital is offering a special program, designed to meet the needs of these patients, their families and friends, entitled “I Can Cope.”
“I Can Cope,” is a program originally developed by the American Cancer Society. It is an educational series that provides information about cancer and its treatment and offers practical help in coping with some of the physical and emotional issues of living with cancer.
Upcoming sessions include:
- Tuesday, September 9 — “Learning about Cancer and Cancer Treatments,” with Michael P. Farrell M.D., Ph.D., medical oncologist.
- Tuesday, September 16 — “Side Effects of Treatment: Fatigue and Pain,” with Cheryl Levesque, R.N., O.C.N., oncology nurse.
- Tuesday, September 23 — “Mobilizing Resources and Support,” with Janis Leird, R.N., M.L.S., Cancer Center patient resource librarian and Doreen Donahue, L.C.S.W., oncology social worker.
- “Taking Charge of Money Matters,” with Diane Eck, financial counselor.
- Tuesday, October 7 — “Keeping Well in Mind and Body – Part One: Nutrition During and After Treatment,” with Laurie Hatch, R.D., dietitian.
- “Exercise and Physical Activity During and After Treatment,” with Susan Dunn, P.T., M.B.A., physical therapist.
- Tuesday, October 14 — “Keeping Well in Mind and Body – Part Two: Communicating Concerns and Feelings,” with Doreen Donanue, L.C.S.W., oncology social worker and “Self-Esteem and Intimacy” with Kelly McCue, R.N., certified oncology nurse.
- Tuesday, October 21 — “Spiritual Wellness and Celebration of Life,” with Dennis McCann, Middlesex Hospital chaplain
All programs will take place from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Conference Rooms A and B, at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center at 536 Saybrook Road in Middletown. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited and registration is required by calling (860) 358-2053.
